REVIEW

When I heard about the synopsis of this novel, I was very interested and curious. Why? Well, because I went into it knowing that, while on their honeymoon in Bora Bora, the main characters see something in the water. If you haven’t realized that already, I am quite a curious person, therefore I absolutely live for mystery. And I needed to know what the hell they saw in the water that made their lives change forever. Steadman creates quite an interesting plot in her debut novel, combining the life of a newlywedded couple, the family dynamics, and how the couple’s lives quickly became very messy upon their return from the honeymoon.

As soon as I picked up this book, I was very interested in what was to come. Take a quick look at the first paragraph and tell me you don’t want to binge the rest of this book right away 👩🏻‍💻

Have you ever wondered how long it takes to dig a grave? Wonder no longer. It takes an age. However long you think it takes, double that.

One of the most interesting parts of this book is the documentary that Erin, the main character and narrator, is directing. For this project, she interviews three people who are currently in jail, each of them for different reasons, and tries to get a grasp on the reasons behind their crimes and their prospects for the future. As a true crime lover, this really interested me, especially considering the psychology of these three criminals. Additionally, one of them reminded me of Hannibal Lector, which is exactly as creepy as it is fascinating.

While I enjoyed this read for the most part, I must admit that the first half of this book was very engrossing and I loved it, but then it started going downhill. The main characters, especially the wife, are a bit stupid at times. I kept reminding myself that they were in a tight situation, but come on. I hate it when the main characters keep blatantly making the worst decisions, it’s so annoying 😫 I also found the revelations in this book to be a bit underwhelming, which is the opposite of what I had expected going into it.

Despite the details mentioned above, I did enjoy the reading experience in general and found SOMETHING IN THE WATER to be a quick and easy read. It is especially suitable for the summertime, considering that it partly takes place in a paradisiacal beach scenario. Thus, overall, this is an addictive, summery thriller with a sprinkle of romance on top – a perfect light beach read for those who love a thriller!
