I was lucky enough to get a beautiful ARC of this book in the mail, so I would like to start off by thanking Minotaur for providing me with a review copy of The First Mistake 💕
As usual, I did not know much about this book when I started reading it, only that it was a domestic thriller by a pretty well-known author who killed it with her debut. The First Mistake follows Alice, a mother of three who owns a design company. She is now married to her second husband, Nathan, because her first husband tragically passed away, leaving behind his wife and daughter. Fortunately, Alice is perfectly happy in her new life, as she has a wonderful husband and kids, a successful business and an awesome best friend. That is, until the moment everything starts falling apart…
This book had me hooked from that moment on, and I had soooo many theories. I even wrote everything that I was suspecting in my bullet journal, that’s how committed I was to finding out the truth here 😄 The author creates a very intelligent and intriguing web of characters, secrets, and ghosts from the past, and I was ALL HERE for it! If you’ve never read any of my other thriller reviews: hi, I’m Vanessa, and I am the biggest sucker for literary lies and secrets that you’ll probably ever meet.
The whole plot is absolutely riveting, and the deeper I got into the story, the more I wanted to keep going – it’s so addictive! There are a lot of different twists throughout the book, but the author manages to not make them confusing, regardless of how many there are, which I definitely appreciate. Additionally, the characters are pretty entertaining and endearing, which makes you even more invested in the story. I’m very curious to see whether the author’s debut The Other Woman is similar to her second, and whether the writing in that is as engrossing as it is in The First Mistake. If you’ve read that one, let me know down in the comments what you thought of it 👇🏻
Overall, The First Mistake is a compelling, addictive read that traps you up in a clever web of characters – and their secrets. I hadn’t realized how much I missed reading domestic thrillers until I picked this one up – and now it’s all I want to read! 😍
I hope you enjoyed reading my thoughts on The First Mistake and if you’d like, check out my other book reviews!
