You might have seen the trailer for this movie going around, and if you’re anything like me, you were instantly drawn to it. I randomly came across it in a Youtube ad, and since I’m a sucker for scary movies, this was right up my alley.
The basic premise of this movie is that people have a shadow, and that shadow lives underground, in sewers and abandoned tunnels. So, at the beginning of the movie, this little girl is at an amusement park type of place and she decides to get away from her parents for a bit. She ends up in one of those attractions that are basically houses full of mirrors that make you get lost. There, she sees her shadow.
The main action takes place years later, when that girl, now an adult, has a family standing in her driveway – and they all look exactly like her and her family members.

This movie is the perfect combination of creepy, horrifying, and funny as hell. Lupita Nyong’o plays two versions of her character and is brilliant in both of them. And the same goes for the remaining main characters, who are all so damn talented.
One thing I noticed and found to be a positive part of US (2019) was how small the cast is. During most of the movie, we only see four different actors, and the remaining six/seven only briefly appear on screen. There are tons of extras that never actually speak or interact, but the core cast is pretty small.
To me, the best part of the movie was the ending. THE FREAKING ENDING!! I wasn’t expecting it, although I had suspected something similar, but wow, that shit blew my mind. Jordan Peele does that brilliant thing where you only show the whole picture after, which means that the whole time, you think you’re seeing one thing – but maybe it’s not quite like that… And that’s all I can say without spoiling you.
That being said, I absolutely loved this movie, and I enjoyed all of the different layers of it – the funny, the creepy, and the horrifying. I shit my pants multiple times due to the jumpscares, so that’s always a plus. However, I must say that there are a few loose ends that should have been tied up. But, who knows, maybe they’re already thinking about the next movie 😉
