Besides thriller and horror books, I am also a huge thriller and horror movie fan. I don’t usually talk about movies or TV series here on the blog – besides book-to-screen adaptations –, but I’m so excited about the movies I’ve seen lately that I can’t help but share that excitement!!
Today I’ll be sharing my thoughts on THE NUN, which I saw last week. It is part of the Conjuring Universe, meaning it takes place in the same ‘universe’ as the Conjuring and Annabelle movies, so things are connected most of the time. I’ve loved pretty much every movie of theirs, and this was no exception. I’m actually thinking about doing a marathon of all of them, considering it’s been a while since I saw the first ones and have forgotten a lot.
Here’s the trailer for THE NUN:
This time, the movie is set in Romania, in an abbey. Besides the new setting, I think this is the most different and ‘original’ of the movies, in comparison to the other stuff from the Conjuring Universe. I don’t want to spoil you, but I felt as though the interaction with the occult was much more prominent and direct than in other movies, and that really pleased me. I hadn’t even watched the trailer, so I had no idea what to expect, aside from the fact that it was about Valak, the unholy nun in Conjuring 2.
I also enjoyed going back in time, since this takes place before the first Conjuring movie. It’s very fun connecting the dots between all the different movies and piecing the chronology together. I also enjoy watching theory videos and making predictions for future movies. By the way, if you’re into this kind of stuff, Hailey Reese does videos on the real stories behind horror movies, such as The Conjuring – it’s very interesting!
The last thing I want to mention is that they found the perfect balance between humour and horror. I was able to laugh with the main characters throughout the movie, while on edge because I knew shit was about to go down any minute. One specific dialogue near the end had me dying laughing, and I felt so bad that the Portuguese subtitles couldn’t translate the joke to its full extent. Anyone watching that isn’t an English speaker won’t understand, which is a bummer. But such is life 🤷🏻♀️
My friends, unlike me, were not very impressed, they just said it was alright, not quite as good as the previous movies. However, I very much enjoyed it and it might be in my top 3 of the Conjuring Universe, along with both of the Annabelle movies. Keep in mind, I’m mostly basing this on how scary they were. The story is also important, but what stays with me after a while are the scariest scenes and an overall idea of how scary it was to me. The Nun is definitely one of the scariest in this universe – it was to me, at least!
Overall, if you’re into the Conjuring universe (or horror movies in general) and enjoy shitting your pants, I recommend that you watch The Nun. The story is wrapped up nicely by the end, so you can connect everything to the previous movies. One thing is for sure: you’ll never see nuns the same way after this!
Have you seen The Nun yet? Let me know if you liked it down in the comments!
Thank you for reading,
I’ll see you in my next post ♡
